I was delighted to be at Bristol Cineworld cinema in Hengrove for the screening of Suffragette on Monday 12 October 2015, when the film went on general release, to give two pre-screening talks about the suffragette movement.
We also set up a display in the foyer.
Suffragette is the first feature film to tell the story of women’s fight for the vote. Starring Carey Mulligan and Helena Bonham Carter as early footsoldiers of the feminist movement, it tells the story of the working-class British women who, inspired by the suffragette leader Emmeline Pankhurst (played by Meryl Streep), took their fight for enfranchisement to Westminster. The film has already made headlines for being the first time a commercial crew has been allowed to shoot inside the Houses of Parliament.

The event was part of The Time is Now series of events. In recognition of the current ground
swell of interest amongst young women in women’s rights worldwide, Film Hub North (part of
the BFI Film Audience Network) and Showroom Workstation have partnered with Pathé
for the release of Oscar-tipped Suffragette, to
coordinate this national season of films and special events entitled The Time Is Now, running from October
– January 2016.
And, as part of the celebrations, there's a chance to win a signed copy of The Bristol Suffragettes plus some lovely Suffragette film goodies! The competition closes on 18 October. Details at Bristol Cineworld's Facebook page here.
